Jane Austen's Bookshelf, HB, Rebecca Romney

When Rebecca Romney found a clothbound edition of Evelina by Frances Burney, she was happy to discover that she'd stumbled across a novel by one Jane Austen's favourite authors. Inspired by the connection between the two writers, she returned to Austen's book with a new lens, picking out clues sprinkled throughout her works that pointed to the writers she had admired.
Romney discovered that, for the most part, the male writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Defoe remain on our bookshelves, but the works of Austen's favourite female writers - like Frances Burney, Ann Radcliffe, Charlotte Smith, Elizabeth Inchbald, Hester Piozzi and Maria Edgeworth - have all but vanished. This ignited a new mission for Romney: she needed to collect Jane Austen's bookshelf.
In Jane Austen's Bookshelf, Romney explores the lives of these women; their works; why they've disappeared from our shelves and history; and encourage readers to pick them up.
